How to Make Watercolor Binder

How to Make Watercolor Binder

I do not make my own binder, but a lot of people do! It is a fun way to fully self-source your own paint. Here is what you need:

  • 3 Tbsp Gum Arabic Powder
  • 2 Tbsp Honey (or glycerin for vegan option)
  • 2 drops Clove essential oil (prevents molding)
  • 6 Tbsp Distilled water (distilled prevents unwanted mineral buildup!)

Dissolve the gum arabic powder into the hot water and mix. When fully disolved, mix in the honey and essential oil.

And that's it! Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator. This will last a very long time, at least for one year, and will make enough binder to fill about 20 full pans of paint.
